The Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Creative Industries (UGAPAFOCI) hosted a momentous two-day National Symposium for Creative Industries. Held on February 1st and 2nd, 2024 at Serena Conference Centre, the symposium was a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage, themed “Our Culture, Our Pride, Our Responsibility: Changing the Narrative.” The illustrious event was graced by Her Royal Highness, Nabagereka, the Queen of the Buganda Kingdom, who officiated the opening ceremony with eloquence and honor, setting the tone for an engaging and insightful gathering.
On the first day of the symposium, the community was enriched by the wisdom of Prof. Dominica Dipio from Makerere University. Her compelling presentation underscored the imperative of establishing a comprehensive database and mapping system for cultural and creative enterprises in Uganda. This foundational work is seen as a critical step in preserving the nation’s cultural legacy while propelling it into a future where tradition and innovation coalesce.
The subsequent panel discussions were a confluence of ideas where the Intersection of Culture and Technology took center stage. Esteemed panelists Mr. Iga, Mr. Mulekwa, Dr. Rwangyezi, and Ms. Drani Emily nuanced the role of Artificial Intelligence and language in sustainable development, and how these tools can be leveraged to reshape the narrative for a sustainable future that honors cultural heritage.
The event also witnessed a heartfelt exchange of artistic expressions. The Honorable Rachel Magoola presented an artistic gift to the chief guest, a symbol that encapsulates the richness of Buganda culture. This offering was tangible representation of the enduring values and aesthetics of the Buganda Kingdom.
Throughout the symposium, the air was charged with a sense of purpose and a collective vision to take ownership of cultural narratives and to weave them into the broader fabric of national identity and pride. It was a clarion call for all stakeholders to embrace their role in the stewardship of culture, nurturing it as a living, evolving entity that enriches every facet of Ugandan life. It was a landmark on the journey towards a future where culture and creativity are the cornerstones of national development.
